'Thanks to training, we will soon be less dependent on agencies for recruitment'

Nicole Schreurs on Adwise Academy's Digital Recruitment training courses

Nicole Schreurs has worked in various positions at Rhenus Road in Venlo for over thirty years. She currently holds a double position in the field of management support and HR and recruitment. Because this is a relatively new world for her, she took several digital recruitment training courses at Adwise Academy. "I am now discovering which tools we need to have in order to be on the ball myself."

Nicole emphasizes that she is not a "real recruiter. Because she knows the organization through and through and has held various management positions, Rhenus' HR Manager Netherlands knocked on her door to see if she wanted to take on recruitment duties. "We were often using external agencies to fill our vacancies. But the job market is
booming and costs are skyrocketing. In order to gain more control over the process as well as the costs, we decided to take matters more into our own hands," Nicole explains.

She has been conducting job interviews and managing various departments for a long time. "I grew up in the freight forwarding world and know what our organization needs and who does and does not fit well with our culture. Because I've been working there for so long, I've become Rhenus' go-to person for questions. So I understand that they thought of me for recruiting new talent for the Road division. I really like that variety myself."

Dual role

The challenge is to fit this into her schedule, because Nicole has a dual role. Both management support and recruitment are difficult to fit into fixed time slots. "It's often just doing this in between, quickly taking care of that. That makes me constantly looking for: where do I find the space and how do I fit everything in? And the work only gets more and more. We are growing very fast. As many as 50 new colleagues have joined us in the past two years."

Moreover, it was important to expand her expertise in the field of digital recruitment, as this is a new world for her and developments are happening at lightning speed. This involved using the STAP budget, the government subsidy of up to 1,000 euros per year for training, courses and education. While searching, the HR manager Netherlands came across the training courses of Adwise Academy in Almelo. "We are in Venlo ourselves, so I had never heard of them. Because it was always a half-day training and I thought it a waste of my time if I had to travel a day for it each time, I followed the training courses online."

Tailored training package

She started with the Digital Recruitment Strategy & Candidate Journey training, followed a few weeks later by Google Ads & Job Boards. Soon to follow is the Advertising via Social training. "After that, we will take stock and see what further training might be needed in 2023. So far, I have not been able to apply much of what I have learned in practice. This is not due to the quality of the trainings, but to how we have organized it here. I haven't had much time to tackle recruitment structurally. That really needs to change next year, so tasks will have to be placed differently."

Rhenus Road currently has many operational vacancies in the warehouseand cross-dock, as well as in the office. "The advantage of doing recruitment yourself is that you know exactly what skills and abilities are required for which position," Nicole says.

Old school

She is very appreciative of the quality of the instructors at Adwise Academy. "They explain the material clearly and there was room for exercises. I did have to get used to working in a Google environment, I personally would have preferred to have the course material emailed to me as a pdf. Preferably also in advance. Then I could have read up on it and you can always pick it up afterwards and read it back, without having to log in to a place you have to remember. In that respect, I'm a little old school."

Nicole expects more digital recruitment training to follow next year. "I definitely want to continue in this. I'm mainly looking at: what is needed for my position? I also plan to take training courses through Good Habits, an online training platform. The goal is to become smarter and get started with useful tools myself. The need is only increasing in view of the personnel shortage and our solid growth."
